It's the event of the fall! The Cinémathèque has entrusted Jean Paul Gaultier with the curating of an exhibition that could not be more Parisian. The great couturier crazy about cinema reconciles his two passions in a formidable retrospective entitled Cinémode and dedicated to his lifelong friend: Tonie Marshall.
A veritable journey between the outfits of stars and cult films, we stroll between the mythical dresses of Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn, the shorts of Rocky Balboa and the leotards of Superman over the excerpts from Les Demoiselles de Rochefort, Who are you Polly Maggoo? and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.
The journey begins with Falbalas, a film by Jacques Becker with Micheline Presle, icon of the 1950s and ultimate source of inspiration in the youth of Jean Paul Gaultier. Half a century before Sex and The City or Gossip Girl, designer Marcel Rochas uses cinema as a showcase for his couture creations. The pitch says it all: a Parisian fashion designer, an incorrigible seducer, is interested in the fiancée of his best friend...
We then stroll in a ping-pong between the worlds of fashion and cinema where we find Jeanne Moreau dressed in Pierre Cardin, Catherine Deneuve sublimated by Yves Saint Laurent, Delphine Seyrig dressed in Coco Chanel or Grace Jones as Azzedine Alaïa in James Bond and Jane Fonda as Paco Rabanne in Barbarella. Fashion in cinema also reflects social phenomena, like Marlene Dietrich or Katharine Hepburn in a masculine-feminine wardrobe in search of freedom and affirmation in the 1930s. As for Marlon Brando in A Streetcar Named Desire, dressed in a simple tank top, he would inspire Jean Paul Gaultier's man as object.

A veritable celebration of fashion, a room deploys the art of the fashion show from every angle, starting with its representation in the cinema with The Women by George Cukor, Funny Face or Prêt-à-Porter… Not to mention obviously the colorful representations of fashion editors with excerpts from The Devil Wears Prada or Absolutely Fabulous... To (re)see absolutely: the spectacular and highly scripted shows by Jean Paul Gaultier, Thierry Mugler or Vivienne Westwood in the 80s, all thought of as art shows in their own right and featuring the biggest tops.
Notice to fans who dream of meeting him “in real life”. An informed film buff, Jean Paul Gaultier will come to present himself before their screenings and talk about his favorite films as well as those whose costumes he created. In the program :
