Video. Claix: he designs 100% recycled costumes<

Romain Fays dresses with plastic bottles and milk proteins. It is a bit caricatural, put like that, but it is with these materials that the 25-year-old entrepreneur, from Claix, designs 100% recycled costumes (man and woman), with minimal environmental impact. He created the brand "Patte blanche atelier" with a friend of promotion met in Lyon, during his studies in management and sustainable development. Pre-orders have been launched for a week (1). In his family home in Claix, with a suit on his back, Romain Fays details this eco-responsible approach.

D'où est venue l'idée d'un costume 100 % recyclé?

Romain Fays.My associate Théo Egéa was marked by the climate summit in Paris in 2017. Arnold Schwarzenegger (former actor and governor of California) wore a green tie. He asked himself, 'what if his whole suit is really 100% green?' We started together from this idea, which echoed our studies, to create our brand. We first took part in one of the largest textile fairs in Paris in February 2019 to soak up the environment. Then we met our model (she's the one who draws the bosses), Véronique Jordan, who works with great luxury brands. We've got suppliers. Finally, we have integrated a start-up incubator affiliated with the Université Lyon 3. Always with this creed in mind: eco-responsibility is not the enemy of elegance.

What materials are used?

The outer fabric is made of polyester, a 100% recycled yarn woven in Italy. The lining in cotton linters, the fibres that cover the seeds. And the buttons are made of milk stone, they're made of casein, a protein in milk. Even the markings on the label are in eco-responsible ink. The fabric is woven near Lyon and the garment is made in Portugal.

Why not France?

Because there was no workshop in France at the time, and that would force us to sell a costume 1,000 €(against 520). We still have French suppliers and our costumes are six times less polluting than those sold in traditional fashion. We arrive at this figure especially with little transport, unlike clothing made on the other side of the world.

You decorate on your website the cost of a suit. Your margin seems modest (40%). You still intend to make a living from it?

Our goal is to be profitable one day, even if our margins cover administration, communication, patronage... In a second step, we would like to offer other clothes, such as shirts or coats.

(1) pre-order on the website www.patteblanche-atelier.com. Men's costumes and women's tailors at 520 €. The retouches are available.
