Quite simply because we know since 2020 that the actor had been approached by Marvel Studios to play a variant of Tony Stark from another universe. The choice of Tom Cruise to play the billionaire playboy and philanthropist is not a trivial choice, since the actor had already been approached for the role of Tony Stark in the early 2000s, long before Marvel Studios set his sights on Robert Downey Jr. So that would be a good way for Marvel to reference their top pick. And then if we closely analyze this photo, we see that the costume worn by Tom Cruise is the same as that worn by the actors who must be reworked in post-production to shape their armor. Why would that make sense? Initially, it was May 2021 for Dr Strange 2 and July 2021 for Spider-Man No Way Home. One of the screenwriters Chris McKenna explained that when he started writing the story for Spider-Man: No Way Home, he had to incorporate what happened in Doctor Strange 2, but COVID changed everything. And this change of schedule pushed the screenwriters to tinker, even improvise. It is no coincidence that Dr Strange 2 went back to reshoot between October and December 2021, because we have to match the schedule of all the actors.
