Designed in the 1950s for the US Air Force and Navy, it was first named MA-1. Created by Alpha Industrie, the official supplier of the Air Force, this nylon garment, lighter and more practical, replaces the original leather jacket. Navy blue or olive, it has a zipped pocket on the sleeve. In 1963, it became reversible, with a fluorescent orange lining for soldiers in distress. Outside of the war, the jacket criss-crossed assembly lines and other American production units, becoming a symbol of the working class. It was previously popularized by James Dean, and by a certain Marylin Monroe, who wore it with pride.

Alternately adopted by skinheads, young hip hop fans, it was then dubbed by the fashion sphere, led by Raf Simons who paraded it in the 2000s. Bombers became chic, and all designers and brands appropriate it to offer the most varied models.
