Miss Myanmar used the global visibility afforded by the Miss Universe competition to send a message about the military junta in Myanmar, warning that "our people are dying".
The military junta seized power in a coup on February 3. The elected leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, was arrested and the power in place overthrown. Weeks of demonstrations ensued and protesters faced an escalation of violence.

More than 5,000 people have been arrested, 4,000 of whom are believed to be still in custody, and there are believed to be at least 800 deaths.
