Since the 1930s, DC Comics and Marvel have clashed relentlessly. The two most famous comic book publishing houses try to compete in ingenuity to win the hearts of readers. This war has even gradually moved from paper to the big screen in recent years. Each of the two franchises has its own way of representing what a superhero is. Sometimes a being with exceptional powers, sometimes a human going through severe trials... But it also happens that rivals inspire each other. You may have noticed that many Marvel and DC characters look eerily similar. So who does what, who is the oldest, who is inspired by whom? We have made a small selection of his false twins for you.
Atom: This is the older of the two. Created by DC in 1940, it is one of the members of the Justice League. He first appears in All-American Comics #19 as Al Pratt. He will later know several identities (Ray Palmer, Adam Cray, Ryan Choi). His powers are: radioactivity, endurance, super strength, speed and change in size.
Ant-Man: he made his first appearance in Tales to Astonish #27 in January 1962, as Henry Pym. Two other men will also play the Marvel superhero: Scott Lang and Eric O'Grady. When its powers: change size, communicate with insects, has a cybernetic helmet.
Namor: he first appears six months before the birth of Marvel. He is featured in Marvel Comics #1. Prince of the seas, son of a human and an Atlantean, he is Marvel's first anti-hero. He is a mutant who works several times with the X-Men. He has many amphibian powers, he breathes underwater, resists pressure, has superhuman strength, has amphibian telepathy. He is also very fast and he has the ability to fly with small wings at his ankles.
Aquaman: First appearance in More Fun Comics #73 (1941). He is the king of Atlantis. His powers are underwater breathing, resistance to underwater pressure, he can communicate telepathically with marine entities. But he also has super strength and developed senses, he resists heat and any type of energy.
Electro: First appearance in The Amazing Spider-Man #9 (February 1964). This character is one of Marvel's supervillains. His real name is Maxwell Dillon. His fingers emit electric arcs. It can absorb electrostatic energy. The superhero recharges at 2000 volts per minute and has great strength thanks to electricity as well as great speed.
Black Lightning: He appears in Black Lightning #1 (April 1977). He is one of DC's first black superheroes. His real name is Jefferson Pierce. He is part of the Justice League. His powers are: manipulation and resistance to electricity, agility, martial arts and he can fly.
Captain America: he first appeared in Captain America Comics #1 in December 1940. His real name is Steve Rogers. He is the superhero who embodies American patriotism, his costume is reminiscent of the country's flag. Here is the list of his powers: physical condition at the peak of human evolution, expert in unarmed combat, acrobatics, accomplished military tactician, almost indestructible shield.
Commander Steel: First appearance in Steel, The Indestructible Man #1 (1978). The story of this character takes place during the Second World War. His real name is Henry Heywood. This character is a former biology student whose professor modified his body with steel. Among his powers are superhuman strength, speed and stamina. Its creator is none other than the one who also gave birth to Captain America: Gerry Conway. Steel's descendants will also later embody other versions of the superhero.
Catwoman: she first appeared in Batman #1 in 1940. Her real name Selina Kyle, Catwoman has no superpowers, she is a skilled and agile burglar. She is sometimes the ally, sometimes the adversary of Batman
Black Cat: first appearance in The Amazing Spider-Man vol.1 #194 in July 1979. A burglar, she regularly fights alongside Spiderman. Like Catwoman she also has no special powers, she is human (real name Felicia Hardy or Felicity Harmon).
Clay Face or Clay-Face: first appearance in Detective Comics #40 in 1940. Several characters will be Clay Faces: Basil Karlo, Matt Hagen, Preston Payne, Sondra Fuller, Cassius "Clay" Payne, Claything, Johnny Williams . Clayface is a recurring enemy of Batman. He is made of clay and can take on the appearance of other people.
Sandman: real name William Baker or Flint Marko, he was created in 1963. He can transform his body into a substance resembling sand and give this substance the shape he wants. It can also change size and scatter into several pieces of sand.
Hawkman: First appeared in #1 Flash Comics, January 1940. Several DC characters have been Hawkman: Carter Hall and Katar Hol. Powers: flight, sense of an eagle, speaks with birds, a magic club, agility, empathy, immortality.
Angel: his appearance dates from X-Men # 1, in September 1963. His real name is Warren Kenneth. Angel is a member of the X-Men. His powers are mainly his ability to fly and lead dogfights. He also has another form: Archangel. Under it, he flies with metal wings, throws sharp feathers and heals himself.
Green Lantern: Appears in issue 16 of All-American Comics in 1940. Several heroes are Green Lantern like Alan Scott, Hal Jordan, Guy Gardner, John Stewart, Kyle Rayner. His powers are given by his ring: he can fly, breathe in space, translate any language and materialize whatever he wants.
Quasar: another cosmic hero created in 1978 in Captain America #217. He also has powers thanks to objects: quantum bracelets. He can manipulate energy (release rays of force or heat), manipulate solid forms, open portals, navigate through space.
Green Arrow: Appears in More Fun Comics #73 in 1941. His real name is Oliver Queen. He doesn't have any superpowers, but he is a master archer who has mastered the martial arts. He is also a skilled fencing master with sabers and swords.
Hawkeye: whose real name is Clint Barton, he appeared in Tales of Suspense #57 in September 1964. This member of the Avengers does not have the power like his big brother from DC either. But he is also a master archer who also masters martial arts.
Ghost Rider: The Ghost Rider character appeared at Marvel in 1972. Johnny Blaze was the first Ghost Rider and Dan Ketch was the second. Among his powers are the fact that he burns with infernal fire, his gaze is atoning, his strength and endurance are superhuman. He shares his body with a demonic alter ego or a demon depending on the version.
Atomic Skull: he is an enemy of Superman in the DC Comics universe. Albert Michaels and Joseph Martin both play this supervillain. His powers: supernatural strength, great agility and atomic explosions.
The Flash: the hero first appeared in Flash Comics #1 in 1940. As with many other superheroes, there are several Flashes: Jay Garrick, Bartholemew "Barry" Henry Allen, Wally West, Bartholemew " Bart” Allen. His powers are mostly speed and endurance.
Quicksilver: Quicksilver in French appears in the X-Men #4 in March 1964. His real name Pietro Maximoff, he is the son of the mutant Magneto. His main power is superhuman speed. It can also break the sound barrier.
Dr. Polaris: his first appearance dates from Green Lantern vol. 2 #21, in June 1963. The first Dr. Polaris was Neal Emerson and John Nichol succeeded him as supervillain. Among his powers: magnetism, manipulation of metal, great intelligence. He's able to manipulate magneto-electric fields on top of that.
Magneto: Created shortly after DC's super-villain, his first appearance was in Uncanny X-Men #1 in September 1963. He is one of the most famous mutants in the X-Men series. At the level of his powers we find the control of magnetism, a super force, flight, the creation of force fields, the molecular modification of metals.
Dr. Fate: First appeared in More Fun Comics #55 in 1940. The most famous Dr. Fate is Kent Nelson (others will follow such as Eric and Linda Strauss, Jared Stevens, Hector Hall, Kent V. Nelson). He is a magician capable of flight. He is nearly invulnerable to magic and practices telekinesis. He also has other powers depending on Dr. Fate's gender.
Dr. Strange: First appears in Strange Tales #110 in 1963. He is a master of the mystical arts named Stephen Strange. He is a wizard who has occult powers.
Deathstroke: he is a mercenary and assassin whose real name is Slade Wilson. His first appearance was in New Teen Titans #2 in December 1980. As a result of genetic modification he has superhuman mental and physical abilities and can also regenerate. The character of Deadpool is directly inspired by him.
Deadpool: He first appears in New Mutants vol. 1 #98. He is known as Wade Wilson. He is a mercenary, opponent of Wolverine. He has like Wolverine a healing factor, great strength, a lot of stamina and great agility. He is an expert in swords, pistols, throwing weapons and hand-to-hand combat. He also knows he's a comic book character.
Solomon Grundy: the character arrives with All-American Comics #61 in October 1944. He is a super-zombie enemy of Batman, Superman and Green Lantern. His powers are: superhuman strength, endurance, regeneration and resurrection ability.
Hulk: the green giant arrives at Marvel in The Incredible Hulk #1 of May 1962. His real name is Bruce Banner, he has several powers similar to those of Grundy: unlimited strength, invulnerability, healing, superhuman speed.
Dark Knight, aka Batman: we no longer present the alter-ego of Bruce Wayne, the most famous superhero. He appeared in Detective Comics No. 27 in 1939. Although the Dark Knight is human and has no supernatural powers, he nevertheless has several marked abilities: he is a genius detective, a master of martial arts and he has access to very high-tech equipment.
Moon Knight, the Knight of the Moon. Heavily inspired by Batman, he first appeared in Werewolf by Night #32 in August 1975. His real name is Marc Spector and like Bruce Wayne he has great strength, athletic-level stamina, and high-tech gear.
Plastic Man: real name Patrick "Eel" O'Brian, he appeared in Police Comics #1 in 1941. In terms of his powers, he stretches his body, practices telepathy, can metamorphose, and he is immortal.
Elongated Man: His first appearance comes in The Flash #112 in 1960. His real identity is Randolph "Ralph" William Dibny. Like Plastic Man he can lengthen his body.
Mr Fantastic: he is also known as Red Richards or the elastic man. He first appears in Fantastic Four #1 in November 1961. His powers are: elasticity and extreme intelligence.
Gladiator: real name Kallark, he appears in Uncanny X-Men vol. 1 #107 in 1977. He's a humanoid alien like Superman. He has many powers: superhuman strength, invulnerability, speed and his eyes also project powerful heat rays
Hyperion: aka Marquez Milton. He is one of Marvel's most powerful superheroes. Of course he also has a host of powers: superhuman strength, superhuman speed, flight, firing atomic bursts through his eyes. It is also, it should be noted, vulnerable to argonite, a radioactive product. Does that remind you of anyone?
Superman: his first appearance is in Action Comics #1 of April 1938. Clark Kent is an alien who comes from the planet Krypton. His list of powers is almost similar to that of his Marvel friends: physical, extra sensory, gravitational and mental powers, flight, X-ray vision, lasers that come out of the eyes.
Swamp Thing: The Swamp Creature appeared in House of Secrets #92 in July 1971. It is a plant creature. She originally has superhuman strength, regenerative abilities, and great physical stamina.
Man-Thing: the Man-Thing is Marvel's vegetable monster, he appears in Savage Tales #1, in May 1971, a few months before Swamp-Thing. She is also nicknamed the creature of the swamp. Among his powers are super-strength and invulnerability. He is also the Master of plants.
Brainiac: He is an enemy of Superman who appears in Action Comics #242 of July 1958. Brainiac is a bald humanoid with green skin. His real name is Vril Dox. His powers are flight, super-strength, great speed, and extraordinary endurance. He also has extra-sensory powers, powers of metamorphosis and duplication.
Ultron: This robot first appears in Avengers #54, in 1968. Ultron is a villain in the Marvel universe who has already been destroyed several times, but he always manages to return in a new body. His powers are numerous: great strength and superhuman resistance, he also projects energy and hypnotizing rays.
Wasp: The Wasp's real name is Janet Van Dyne. He is one of the most important members of the Avengers. She first appears in Tales to Astonish #44 in June 1963. Her powers are: size changes, communication with insects, and energy projection.
Bumblebee: This little heroine appeared in Teen Titans #45 in December 1976. Her name is Karen Beecher-Duncan. She too can become tiny like her Marvel sister. His solar-powered suit also allows him to fly. She also sends sonic fireballs.
