Optional Black Tie
It doesn't matter how dressed up it is, unless you're a royal highness or a relative of them. This step is just before the tuxedo: optional black tie means you should wear a suit and tie with dress shoes. No alternative. The anonymous women we interviewed were torn between the classic navy suit and a slightly sharper gray double-breasted suit.
What they liked:
“I liked all the costumes but since the black tie is OPTIONAL I thought a darker costume would be better.”
“The blue and cognac combo = heart in the eyes.”
“The blue suit and brown shoes go very well together. The little flower on the tie is a nice finishing touch.”
“I like dark suits on men. The gray was the darkest. I think it looks classier.”

Cocktail attire
If the dress code says “cocktail attire,” consider this wedding a chance to try something a little different. It is also permission to remove the tie. The women preferred the light blue suit, the white shirt and the braided moccasins with a good 69%. Several of them talked about a clean and sexy color and cut. Listen instead.
What they liked:
“It's sexy and relaxed without a tie. The others just look frumpy.”
“Very classy and sexy. Add to that a smirk and his arm around me and I see us having a great time around the pool having drinks before the reception!”
“It shows a lot of class. The shoes are an unexpected, modern twist on the classic style.”
“I think short sleeves at a wedding are in bad taste. It's the only option with the long sleeves and the sky blue suit looks fresh for cocktail attire.”
