Netflix ended 2020 on a high note. The streaming platform unleashed passions thanks to its latest original creation in partnership with Shondaland: The Bridgerton Chronicle. When Daphne, a young bride, plots a strategy with the Duke of Hastings to find a good match, she never imagined that she would finally fall under his spell. Princess dresses, rumors in the corridors of castles and passionate romances… to wait until the release of season 2, Vogue has brought together six series in the same vein as Bridgerton.
Before the very popular adaptation of the work of Jane Austen by Joe Wright, a series was born on the British channel BBC One. Colin Firth was Darcy and Jennifer Ehle Elizabeth Bennet. This six-episode miniseries closely followed Jane Austen's novel and gave many viewers a new perspective on this classic author. Since then, Regency love stories have become hugely popular, and Austenian tourism is attracting more and more fans following in the footsteps of the heroes of the novelist most suited to film and television.
Why we watch: for the time, similar to that of Bridgerton but also and above all, the relationship between Elizabeth and Darcy. Nothing destined this mythical couple of literature and cinema to end up together and yet their love story still unleashes passions. Will Daphne and Simon become as legendary as their predecessors?
Pride and Prejudice screenwriter Andrew Davis takes on Jane Austen's unfinished work, Sanditon. Charlotte Heywood is invited to the seaside resort of Sanditon to recover from an ankle injury. First an observer, the young girl will discover a world of intrigues and passions to which she will not be able to remain insensitive.

Why we watch: for the varied cast, gossip and pop music that punctuates the series like Bridgerton. Fans of Regé-Jean Page will also appreciate the charm of Sanditon, played by Theo James in the role of Sydney Parker.
In 2016, Jenna Coleman left Doctor Who and assumed the crown of Queen Victoria. The first season retraces the coronation of the illustrious sovereign at the age of 18, her first steps on the throne as well as her meeting with Prince Albert, who will become her husband. In three seasons, Daisy Goodwin's series traces the political and private life of a queen who forged the history of the United Kingdom.
Why we watch: for the stunning costumes and sets especially, but also the attention to detail. The series wants to be as close as possible to the truth and is inspired in particular by the private diaries written by Victoria. Another tantalizing argument: Jenna Coleman and Thomas Hughes embody a resolutely modern couple despite the times. Here, it is the wife who has full power over her husband's life.
The action takes place 100 years after Bridgerton but the problem is the same: what future awaits young noble girls to marry? Downton Abbey immerses us in the daily life of a fictional aristocratic family that reigns over a country estate. After the death of the heirs in the sinking of the Titanic, the Crawley family - endowed with only three daughters - must find a solution to survive and ensure the inheritance which can only be transmitted to a man. On the sidelines of the adventures that await Mary, Edith and Sybil, the servants of the house also lead a life full of twists and turns.
Why we watch: For the drama, turn-of-the-century costumes and realism of everyday life in this small Yorkshire community of the 1910s. Not to mention the award-winning performances and rare but treasured appearances by Maggie Smith as Lady Crawley, pungent and cantankerous.
This two-season British-American mini-series takes us back to the days of Catherine of Aragon. Based on the novels The Constant Princess and The King's Curse by Philippa Gregory, the program begins when she travels to England to marry and secure peace between Spain and her adopted country. But when Arthur, her future husband, suddenly dies, she has no choice but to turn to her younger brother to maintain the alliance between England and Spain.
Why we're watching: For the backstage shenanigans at the English court and the explosive character of Catherine of Aragon. The young girl, played by Charlotte Hope, is released into the lion's den and carries the destiny of Spain on her frail shoulders.
Let's leave the frills and ribbons of the Regency for the Scotland of 1743 where Claire, a young Englishwoman of the 1940s, is propelled into the past thanks to the magic of the menhirs. In a world completely unknown to her, the sassenach - "foreign" in Scottish - will have to survive against the savagery of an era and hide her identity. Married by force to Jamie Fraser, a rebellious Scottish, she will end up falling in love with this new life and the man who will know how to protect her from the many dangers that await her.
Why we watch: for the history lesson between Scotland and England but above all the overflowing chemistry between Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe, the interpreters of Jamie and Claire. As in Bridgerton, the heroine lectures a man on the place of women in a patriarchal society. Again, the emphasis is on gender equality in married life and the importance of male characters sensitive to the condition of women.
