Four more days. Four days before the 2021 NBA Draft scheduled for July 29. An event that is always eagerly awaited in the off-season, because in addition to new prospects arriving in the Great League, a lot is happening behind the scenes: rumors, discussions around potential transfers... in short, things are heating up. So we wanted to do a full update on the latest information to be up to date. Let's Go!
We got this information from our friends Shams Charania (The Athletic), Adrian Wojnarowski and Zach Lowe (ESPN), three rather reliable names in the NBA universe. No “Source: tkt” here, just solid.
Clearly, Bradley Beal is asking real questions about his future in Washington. He loves D.C., but he also wants to win. This weekend, rumors indicated a possible transfer request in the coming days from Bealou, a scenario which could become reality according to the latest information. A decision is expected from the Wizards star guard later this week, possibly before Thursday's Draft as any potential deal including BB would likely revolve around multiple picks.
At this time, the Wizards have not received any requests from Beal and are therefore focused on the Draft and the Free Agency. If that were to happen, the Washington franchise would obviously be waiting for the best possible offer. We can talk about Golden State (see below), Boston possibly with Jaylen Brown – even if we don't know if the Celtics would be ready to let him go – or even Miami (with potentially Tyler Herro and draft picks in the deal) and of course Philadelphia (with Ben Simmons). As a reminder, Bradley Beal is potentially entering his last year of contract and therefore has some leeway in relation to his future and a possible transfer.
What will the Warriors do during the offseason with their draft picks (7 and 14) or even James Wiseman? That's the big question in the Bay today, as July 29 approaches. According to the latest information, the Dubs would be ready to drop this kind of package for a certain Bradley Beal… provided of course that the latter makes himself available. Otherwise, Golden State would have to use its two picks in the Lottery. And as said before, Ben Simmons seems out of the equation.
It's no secret that the Sixers are looking for a deal for Ben Simmons, and have been talking to a lot of teams since this disastrous end to the Playoffs. Obviously, Philly wants an All-Star caliber counterpart to continue playing the title under the leadership of Joel Embiid. C.J. McCollum – a name we hear a lot – represents an interesting option but Daryl Morey is rather targeting Damian Lillard, who has not yet asked to be traded.
If the Sixers were to get a solid player in the backcourt this offseason, like Kyle Lowry, they could wait to trade Simmons, and possibly see what Ben can do with a real point guard in the roster. This is all the more true as the Boomer still has four years of contract. So no rush.
With his player option, Kawhi Leonard can potentially become a free agent and therefore leave the Clippers. With his injury in the Playoffs, and rumors about Kawhi's alleged frustration with the California franchise's medical staff, the scenario of a departure seems less unlikely than before, but according to the latest news, there are no signs. points today to a signing of Leonard in a franchise other than the Clippers. The Angelinos can blow.
One of the big questions of the offseason is about Chris Paul. Will he take his player option at 44 million dollars or leave it aside to sign a deal over several years? It remains a mystery and we will see what the Point God will decide, but you should know that for the Suns, there will be the Cameron Payne file – free agent – to manage as well as the future extensions of Deandre Ayton and Mikal Bridges, potentially restrictive free agents in a year.
A lot of names have been associated with the Lakers for the past few days. You really have to take tweezers with these rumors, especially when it talks about a potential arrival of a third star in L.A., who has neither the cap space nor the assets to mount a Big Three alongside LeBron James and Anthony Davis . It is in particular because of this lack of resources that an extension of the leader Dennis Schroder – free agent – seems to be the most likely scenario. For what amount? And does Dennis really want to stay in L.A.? It remains to be seen, but if we were to bet our house, we would bet on an overtime.
However, guys like Kyle Lowry, Spencer Dinwiddie and DeMar DeRozan are also said to be in general manager Rob Pelinka's small papers. To hope to bring in any of these guys, who are all free agents, a sign & trade. Not easy, and then there should be competition, especially on the Lowry file. Indeed, besides the Lakers, other franchises like the Heat, Pelicans, Sixers and Mavericks are on the way. Kyle could receive a contract with a salary between 25 and 30 million dollars a year.
Speaking of potential trade, the 2020 champions have reportedly offered a Kyle Kuzma – Kentavious Caldwell-Pope package to a large number of teams within the League, in particular to obtain a point guard / playmaker. We also learn that the Lakers and the Kings discussed the 2002 Conference Finals a deal involving sniper Buddy Hield, a deal in which Kuz would be involved. The latter is one of the main assets for the Lakers if they want to set up a trade. Obviously, several franchises would be interested in his services.
Restricted free agent, Lonzo Ball has a good chance of playing elsewhere than the Pelicans next year, they who do not intend to break the bank to keep Zo ( even if they can decide to extend it for the trader afterwards). Among the main candidates to recruit him are the Bulls, looking for a leader and possessing cap space. The two franchises had already discussed the Lonzo case during the March trade deadline. Just for information, on the Chicago side, if Ball finally puts his suitcases elsewhere, a certain… Derrick Rose could make his return to the Windy City. Big eyes emoji.
Speaking of the Bulls, who are looking to get back to the Playoffs fairly quickly, Tomas Satoransky would interest a lot of people. The Czech guard, who currently has a partially guaranteed salary for the 2021-22 season, would indeed be in the small papers of several franchises.
Going back to the Pels, we are offering a package with the tenth choice of the 2021 Draft and the contract of Eric Bledsoe (18 million in 2021-22, 19 in 2022-23 but only three million guaranteed) or even Steven Adams . The priority objective for NOLA is obviously to reduce the payroll, in particular to build the best possible roster with Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram. It remains to be seen if the Pelicans can still get a draft pick in return, like the 17th of the Grizzlies for example. New Orleans and Memphis reportedly discussed such a deal recently.
Among the files of the offseason in Brooklyn, in addition to the possible extensions of the Big Three Kevin Durant – James Harden – Kyrie Irving and Landry Shamet (and the end of the contract of Bruce Brown Jr ., restricted free agent), we have free agents Blake Griffin and Jeff Green. We've talked about these two before here, and it'll be interesting to see how their situation develops. An extension of Griffin would be on the right track, on the other hand it could be a little more complicated for Green, who could seek a more imposing contract elsewhere.
Newly NBA champion, precious during the Finals against Phoenix and new legend of Milwaukee, Bobby Portis was well placed before arriving on the market. And that could precipitate his departure from the Bucks if Bobby is looking to fill his bank account first. The 2021 NBA champions will be able to offer him the six million dollar mid-level taxpayer exception, but Portis could get a mid-level salary on the market, worth $9.5 million.
A restricted free agent, Jarrett Allen should get a big contract this summer, probably with the Cavaliers who can match all the offers. The Cleveland franchise intends to extend its young pivot, even if the Raptors – looking for a position 5 – should be aggressive on the file.
Draft-wise, the Cavs look pretty hot to pick up USC insider Evan Mobley and pair him with Jarrett Allen in the key. And concerning the Collin Sexton file, Cleveland is still considering a trade but it does not mean that the Ohio franchise will simply sell him (to obtain draft picks for example), he who weighed 24 points on average this season. The goal is clear for the Cavs: progress next year,
Author of a great season at the Mavericks, Tim Hardaway Jr. has put himself in a good position for the Free Agency. And Dallas intends to extend it if we believe the latest news. Dallas could save some money by letting him slip away, but the Texas franchise, which has seen a lot of behind-the-scenes changes in recent weeks, wants to give Luka Doncic as much support as possible, and THJ is a pretty good offensive element. It remains to be seen if the shooting guard has a similar project in mind, and what the amount of his next contract will be.
The Nuggets are seeing two of their players arrive on the Free Agency market, and not just any. Indeed, Will Barton and JaMychal Green have both declined their player option to become a free agent. Does that mean they're on the way out? Not necessarily. Indeed, in the case of Barton, there is great interest on both sides to continue the adventure a little longer. As a reminder, Will has been in Denver since 2015. In the case of Jean-Michel, it should also discuss extension with the Nuggets, but his return is less likely. We will have to see what Denver plans to do, because Jamal Murray's big contract is now on the accounts, there will soon be the extension of Michael Porter Jr. to manage, and Aaron Gordon is entering the last year of his contract.
We know that the Rockets dream of going up to the Draft to get the first choice and take Cade Cunningham. But it could be very tense. On the other hand, Houston could climb a little later, the Texas franchise offering one of its two picks at the end of the first round – namely 23 or 24 – with fullback Eric Gordon. Not sure if the package is enough, however, given that Gordon has at least two more years of contract at 20 million a year.
With their first draft pick, the Pistons seem destined to select Cade Cunningham. A few days before the big event, the Detroit franchise continues to analyze the other files, but it would be a huge surprise to see Adam Silver call another name first on July 29.
Myles Turner in rumors, what a surprise! Accustomed to being in transfer discussions, the Pacers pivot would interest teams like Charlotte and New Orleans. We know the Hornets need a pivot, we also know the Pelicans need spacing, so it's not really surprising. Recently, there have also been rumors about a potential arrival of Turner in Golden State. For the moment, nothing very hot, but a file to watch.
The Knicks will be one of the franchises to watch this summer. With their big salary margin and their draft picks, they can play a real role in the market. Thursday night, New York could go up to the Draft since the Knicks would offer their pick 19 and 21 to climb the hierarchy and choose higher. Anyone interested?
With 850 picks, the Thunder have options and we can count on Sam Presti to try to get into the 2021 NBA Draft, Oklahoma City having only picked up the sixth pick this year. The boss of OKC should thus contact the Rockets and the Cavaliers, who respectively have the pick number 2 and 3, to try to set up a deal.
There you go, you know all about the latest news and rumors that punctuate the NBA universe today. With Draft 2021 fast approaching as well as the Free Agency, things should heat up more and more in the coming days, so stay tuned.
