Guide to the 5 most beautiful fashion museums in Paris to know, whether you are passionate or simply curious.

The Galliera Palace

The Fashion Museum of the City of Paris is located in the palace of the Duchess of Galliera who had the idea in 1978 to build the museum to receive her prestigious collection of works of art that she wishes bequeath to the city of Paris. The architect Léon Ginain is in charge of the project. In 1894, the establishment officially opened its doors in the 16ᵉ arrondissement, but it was not until 1977 that the Palais Galliera became the Paris Fashion Museum. A setting for highly successful temporary exhibitions (we think of Alaïa, Dalida, The 50s and more recently Margiela-Galliera 1988-2018), creating impatience between each period of closure, the Palais Galliera is today one of the most prestigious fashion museums in the world. Currently closed for work, the museum is enjoying a second life at the end of 2019 with the opening of new exhibition galleries, called Gabrielle Chanel, made possible thanks to the exclusive patronage of the Chanel house. The institution will now highlight, all year round, collections telling the story of fashion from the 18th century to today, in its new underground rooms spread over 670 m² and furnished by the architect Dominique Brard. The Palais Galliera, currently directed by Miren Arzalluz, will thus become the only permanent fashion museum in France.

Inaugurated in 1905 in the Marsan wing of the Louvre Palace, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, designed by the architect Gaston Redon, houses an astonishing collection of decorative arts and design. A fund of more than 150,000 pieces of men's, women's and children's fashion, dating from the 13th to the 21st century, including exceptional donations from Paul Poiret, Madeleine Vionnet, Elsa Schiaparelli, Cristobal Balenciaga and Christian Lacroix and also Christian Dior who donated of the prototype of the bar suit, the icon of the New Look of 1947, in 1957. Creator of sensational exhibitions, such as Dries van Noten or Proper attire required!, the museum hit the mark by presenting the exhibition Christian Dior, couturier du rêve in 2017, given on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the house and which attracted more than 700,000 visitors. A record for the museum, which will be revamped on February 28 by reopening its Fashion Galleries, restored thanks to the patronage of American financier Stephen A. Schwarzman and his wife.

The Yves Saint Laurent Museum

On October 3, 2017, the Yves Saint Laurent Paris Museum opened its doors in the historic private mansion at 5 avenue Marceau which currently houses the Pierre Bergé - Yves Foundation Saint Laurent. This brand new space, spread over 450 m², hosts a retrospective tour presenting around fifty models accompanied by accessories, sketches, photographs and videos, as well as themed exhibitions. The highlight of the visit, the former couture salons and Yves Saint Laurent's studio, which take you back to the origins of the Parisian house founded in July 1961. Scenographed by Nathalie Crinière and decorated by Jacques Grange, loyal collaborators of the Foundation , and designed by the Jean-Michel Rousseau architectural firm, the Yves Saint Laurent Paris museum immerses the visitor in the original atmosphere of the haute couture house through event exhibitions such as L'Asie rêvée d'Yves Saint Laurent, teleported at the end of April to the Museum of Asian Arts in Nice.

The City of Fashion and Design

A bright green snake by Jakob + Macfarlane suspended above the Seine, the City of Fashion and Design attracts all eyes. Installed in a former industrial warehouse of the Port of Paris built in 1907, the place welcomes all the trendy fauna of the 13th arrondissement, who come to enjoy its breathtaking view on the teeming rooftop when the weather comes. But we go there above all for its ephemeral exhibitions honoring artistic and creative currents, often put in dialogue with the creations of the students of the IFM, elected best French fashion school in 2015 and reference establishment for almost 30 years for students wishing to succeed in management, communication and fashion design.

The Fan Museum

A pioneer of its kind, the Atelier Anne Hoguet - Fan Museum is the very first dedicated to this refined fashion accessory. Since 1993, there have been 2,500 pieces from the 16th to the 20th century, in rooms with sublime decoration: monumental fireplace, walls lined with blue cloth embroidered with fleur-de-lys in gold thread, crown chandeliers... Fans - some of which come from the Hoguet collection, rub shoulders with the working tools of the fan maker in charge of filling them with silk, organza, lace or even feathers. A poetic parenthesis to discover rare fabrics and materials.
