The girl's father gave evidence behind closed doors during the stepmother's trial at the end of October, but the judge gave a long summary during his instructions to the jurors .

The man claims to have a "fuzzy mind" and retains only "flashes" of the events of April 28 and 29, 2019. He remembers that the child tried to escape through his bedroom window at twice on the morning of the 28th. During the night, she managed to escape completely naked. She rang a neighbor's doorbell.

The father of the child explains that the girl slept without clothes, because she often urinated and defecated in her room. It is also him whom we were forbidden to identify and who accompanied the child, in tears, to his house after his nocturnal escape.

The man piles up furniture in front of the child's bedroom windows and installs an alarm system. But the little girl moves the furniture.

This new attempt to escape puts the father out of his mind, says the mother-in-law during her own testimony. “He was stiff frustrated. For me, he freaked out. There are no other words […]. He was cursing after me, he was cursing after [the victim],” she said.

The father is not tender either, when the lawyers ask him to explain the gesture of the mother-in-law who admitted to having added adhesive tape to the victim, on the morning of April 29. "Two wires misconnected that day because normally she wouldn't have acted that way," he claimed.

The paternal grandmother of the little victim believes that her son, who is avoiding the holding of his trial, "is getting off too easily". “We would have liked him to have a trial and face his responsibilities. What he did to the little girl, it goes through the roof, ”she told La Presse.

Casablanca is the father

After the little girl runs away at night, the father puts on an adult shirt for the child. “He says he tied his wrists together like a straitjacket,” summarizes Judge Louis Dionne, during his instructions.

While the mother-in-law holds the child's legs, he wraps duct tape between the girl's elbows and shoulders as well as around a toque that covers her ankles. He has no intention of hurting her, he said. He then goes back to bed.

When he wakes up, he gives medicine to the child, who is in a “normal state”, and goes to work. "He did not go to see [the victim] because he has confidence in the parental abilities of [the mother-in-law]", underlines judge Louis Dionne.

At 8:12 in the morning, the mother-in-law sends a series of text messages to the father to tell him that the girl has broken away. She mentions that she “tied her up properly”, that the child cries, cries, that she does not stop “her big number”.

The father, identified as "Casablanca" in his phone contacts and in media reports, replies: "What do you want me to do? »

At 9:27 a.m., he finally resigns himself to going home.

The father is free

When he gets home around 10 a.m., he leaves a message on the voicemail of the child psychiatrist he is to meet in the afternoon. He goes to the bathroom where he hears the little girl “screaming murder”. He does not go to see her because he is used to his crises, he defends himself.

He says that the mother-in-law opened the door to the girl's room a few times to check inside the room. The mother-in-law swore that she never returned to the room after 8 a.m.

The father answers the call of the medical specialist. Once he hangs up, he goes to his daughter's room, who is no longer screaming to offer him food. “As he enters the room, he finds that [la fillette] does not move, that nothing is happening”, sums up the judge.

The child has more tape around his body than when he left home for work, says the father.

He says he saw the color of [the victim's] skin change. In her head, she was dead. He was just trying to bring her back. For him, the arrival of the ambulance seemed like an eternity. He adds that time no longer existed, that it was hell.

Judge Louis Dionne, summarizing the evidence

It is also the voice of the father that we heard when listening to the call to 911.

The man was arrested later that morning. He was charged with forcible confinement, criminal negligence causing death, child abandonment and failing to provide the necessaries of life.

He was released, on certain conditions, a few months after his arrest.

Up to 10 years in prison

Last Monday, the father pleaded guilty to the charge of forcible confinement, in the absence of any media. The court process has been terminated on the charge of criminal negligence causing death. The charge of child abandonment was ultimately not filed.

The count of forcible confinement is liable to a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison. The law does not provide for a minimum sentence. The parties must appear at the Trois-Rivières courthouse on January 7 for submissions on the sentence.

Recall that the child's stepmother was convicted of second degree murder and forcible confinement last week. Jurors took less than five hours to reach a unanimous verdict. Observations on the 38-year-old woman's sentence will take place on Friday.

It is forbidden to disclose the names of the actors in this drama to protect the victim's little brother and half-brother. They were minors at the time and still are.
